Berber People of Atlas Mountains
The Berber people, indigenous to the Atlas Mountains in North Africa, have a rich cultural history dating back millennia.
Primarily residing in Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, and Libya, the Berbers are known for their distinct languages, including Tamazight. The name ‘berber’ is derived from ‘barbarian’, so-called by the Greeks because they couldn’t understand them (bah, bah).
Traditionally semi-nomadic, their way of life in agriculture and crafts, producing vibrant textiles and carpets has remained unchanged for hundreds or thousands of years.
The Atlas Mountains serve as a backdrop to their unique villages, characterized by terraced architecture.
